UmeÃ¥ is the biggest city in Northern Sweden, and the regional capital of Västerbotten County. As a university town, UmeÃ¥ owns a rather young population. About 1/3 of its 120,058 inhabitants are students, resulting in an average age of 38 years.

Not only does the city enjoy a energetic and lively atmosphere, its infrastructures are beyond well-built. Public buses are equipted with Wi-Fi, plenty of plantation is maintained throughout the city, and bike paths also make it extremely earth and bike friendly, providing a clean, convenient and pleasant living environment. UmeÃ¥ can therefore be best described as green and advanced.

UmeÃ¥ was designiated Â¨2014 European Capital of Culture¨ by the European Union, and events of all genres have been thriving ever since. Parties, sport events, international markets, music festivals, exhibitions of different art forms are held year round.

The new city library opened in November 2014. Not only is it visually brilliant inside out, it has been venues from dramas to UmeÃ¥ Open concerts. It is not far from the Bildmuseet (The Picture Gallery), sitting also on the bank of Ume river. Interesting exhibitions are held in an architecture which is a feat of design itself.

Another reason which makes living in UmeÃ¥ so special is the natural environment. Its geographical location makes phenomena such as northern lights, polar night, midnight sun possible, and experiencing them in person is sensational. Sitting at the latitude of 63°49′32″N, the city is characterized by short, warm summers and snowy winters, separated by the delightful seasons of visually vibrant springs and colorful autumns.

In 1888, a fire destroyed large parts of UmeÃ¥. To prevent similar catastrophies in the future, 3000 birches were planted along avenues in the city to stop the spreading of potential fire, giving UmeÃ¥ its nickname ¨The City of Birches¨. The birches also garantee a splendid view on sunny days, and turns the city into a picturesque red every autumn.

And there is Nydala lake. Only 5 kilometeres away from the city center, and it feels like a totally different world. If you love nature, but also adore the convenience and entertainment city lives have to offer, UmeÃ¥ will not disappoint.
